Is Your Facebook, Web Site...Making Money? Are You Getting a Return on Your Web Investment?

by Suzanne Engels, WebArtNTech

Do you know if your website, your Facebook page, blog, or online store effectively markets and sells your products and services? Whether you are attracting your target market? Or are you just giving away information for free to strangers who will never buy from you?

Do you know whether you are actually getting ROI -- returns on your investments of time and money? Or are you just twittering away, Facebook posting and tweeting away the hours - with little ROI?

Like any marketing effort, tracking your marketing results will make your business profitable. Analytics & visitor statistics reveal the effectiveness of your Business Facebook page, website, Google local maps listing, etc. These stats provide insight to the value each site/page adds to your business and provide the opportunity to increase their effectiveness, thereby attracting more qualified prospects from your target market. Bottom Line: Increased sales.

Important visitor statistics include:

- Unique visits (by day, by week, by month)

- Visitor demographics

- Pages visited

- Referring sites (also called 'incoming links')

- Search engine keywords and phrases

Every web application - LinkedIn, Facebook or Google Maps, your web site, your online store or your blog - has these valuable analytics and statistics. Use these to track the effectiveness of your online investments and to get hints on how to increase your business visibility on the Web.

Google Analytics, although very popular and useful, can be overwhelming. We prefer Urchin Statistics - which comes for free with many web hosts. However, if you are using Google Analytics, use the above list of topics to get a simpler baseline report to help make sense of numbers Google gives you.

In addition, check your business ranking in Google, Yahoo & Bing. Check your 'findability' (how easy it is to find you) by searching key phrases such as -

  • Your personal name
  • Your business name
  • Phrases people search for your products or services

Analyze these results - analytics and findability - regularly and look for trends & marketing opportunities to optimize your business web presence. Use the tools and you will attract your target market and increase sales.
