SUMMER/FALL 2005
The Windmill Garden
We added a new 5000-sq. ft. garden -- the Windmill Garden (they all have names) -- which brings our total area under cultivation to one acre.
Other seasonal news -
- the second year of our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program went really well... 23 members... we're thinking of expanding next year to two pickup days per week, 20 members for each pickup day. The farmers' markets in Wells & York also went very well.
- We had fun trying several new crops this year: bok choi, collard greens, kale, arugula, parsley, basil, celery, cilantro. All did well... even the celery, which tasted great and was a gorgeous sight in the garden -- a deep vivid green. (We made no attempt to blanch it, so it was dark green with a strong flavor.)
- planted our first strawberry bed this spring, which, if all goes well, will produce its first crop next spring (2006).
- For the winter we have plenty of eggs & rabbit meat. Folks should call if they want rabbit meat, but the eggs are available on an honor system, 7 days a week, in a fridge in the barn. We keep the light on out there until 9pm.
WINTER/SPRING 2005
New Greenhouse
Thanks to our wonderful greenhouse, we've been harvesting greens & radishes since the first market on May 7.
Now that the outside greens are almost ready, we're gradually switching the greenhouse over to hot-weather crops.
We have cukes, tomatoes, & eggplants in there so far.
(If you look really hard you can make out the cukes in the picture -- they're barely visible, planted down the middle of the Swiss chard bed just to right of the garden cart. Since this picture was taken the cukes have grown a lot and we've ripped out most of the chard.) Gonna put some basil plants in there too.

FALL 2003
Rhode Island Reds join the girls!
Next year's egg producers are growing like crazy: 100 pullets (4
times as many as last year), 8 weeks old now. We've decided to get a
different breed every year, to make it easier to keep the old ones and
young ones separate. This year we went with Rhode Island Reds
New Horse Stables
We're boarding horses now. No spaces available at the moment, but
possible openings in the Spring. Taking names for waiting list.
New CSA program coming in Spring.
Chick Farm's first CSA program! (Stands for
Community Supported Agriculture.) We haven't worked out all the
details yet, but people will sign up (and pre-pay) ahead of time, and
place their orders by email for once-a-week pickup, probably on
Mondays.
